Man jailed, fined over ganja at Mackenzie Sports Club

A Wismar Housing Scheme man was yesterday sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined $10,000 for possession of marijuana at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground for the purpose of trafficking.

Seon Franklyn, 42, of 119 East Wismar Housing Scheme allegedly had in his possession while at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground on September 13, 2009, 70 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

He appeared nervous when he called upon to defend the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

He failed to inform the court that he was represented by an attorney-at-law who was absent.

Franklyn told the court that there were several men standing in the area where he was arrested but the others had fled when they noticed the police officer.

“He come and arrest me because was me alone deh whey he find de drugs,” Franklyn said.

He declined to cross-examine police detective Urwin Gordon who gave evidence against him.

An elderly woman believed to be Franklyn’s mother was ordered out of the courtroom after a loud outburst when the magistrate found him guilty and sentenced him to three years imprisonment and a fine of $10,000.

After being sentenced and while being led to the prisoners’ bench Franklyn pulled a slip of paper from his pocket indicating that his lawyer could not be available to lead his defence yesterday.
