William France Fitness Walk set for Sunday in Essequibo

Amputee walker, William ‘The Conqueror’ France along with Dennis Burns of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) will join two other amputees from Essequibo for the popular event which will be held for the first time in Region Two. The Walk will last for two-and-a-quarter miles and will start at 4.30pm.

Trophies will be awarded to the first male and female finishers in the Open category and the first male and female finishers with disabilities. Prizes will also be given to the youngest and oldest participants.

France, 53, an Essequibo native told Stabroek Sport that he is aiming to participate in the Boston Marathon scheduled for April 19 in the United States of America.

France said this will be his sixth appearance at the marathon and that he has the added distinction of being the oldest person in the world to take part in the event.

The Walk planned for Essequibo has been organized by the community-based rehabilitation group in Region Two.

It is sponsored by Director of Sports Neil Kumar, Humphrey’s Bakery, Region Two Chairman Ali Baksh, Ramchand Auto Sales, Peaches Taxi Service, Trophy Stall, Nigel’s Supermarket, Leslie Blacks, Simone Baburam and Paul Campbell.

Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsarran will present a brand new wheelchair to Indira Ramnauth after the activity. Banks DIH and Demerara Distillers Limited will provide complimentary water for the participants.
