Gordial-John, Atkins in USA women’s squad

Guyanese women cricketers Indomatie Goordial-John and Candacy Atkins were named in the United States team to oppose Canada in the ICC Americas Women’s  World Cup Qualifier tournament billed for next month in Toronto, Canada, the USA Cricket Association announced over the weekend.

Goordial-John was named most valuable player (MVP) and best batswoman in the just concluded five-team USA National Women’s Cricket championships played last weekend in California.

Atkins captained the victorious North East Region team that played unbeaten in the tournament with Goordial-John top scoring with 76 runs in the team’s opening  encounter against Western Charger.

The  USA Cricket Association in announcing the squad and six reserves  disclosed that the squad includes several players with cricketing experience who participated in last year’s ICC Americas tournament held in Florida, as week as some newcomers to the sport.

The 20 players identified were selected from more than 60 women who participated in last weekend’s national championships in Cupertino, California. Details regarding the management personnel of the squad were expected shortly, USA Cricket disclosed.

The ICC America’s Women’s World Cup qualifying series will take place from July 11-18 at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club ground in  Toronto.

The winner of the ICC Americas three-day 50-overs contest will be the regional representative at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup global qualifying event to be held in 2011, and in preparation for the 2013 Women’s Cricket World Cup in India.

In the rare event that the scheduled three-match series ends in a tie, the winner will be decided on the basis  of net run-rate.

The squad reads:  Joan Alexander-Serrano, Bushra Ali, Candacy Atkins, Durga Das, Doris Francis, Indomatie Goordial-John, Nadia Gurny, Catherine Joy Jones, Triholder Marshall, Monique Mathee, Rohini Prabhune, Grace Richards,  Shondel Ward and Pauline Williams.

The six reserves are Shebani Bhaskar, Louise Brown, Sana Ilahi, Erica Rendler, Sonakshi Sagar and Elizabeth Vitte.
