Goordial-John, Atkins excel in USA

Two Guyanese women cricketers were in excellent form over the weekend in the United States at the USA Cricket National Women’s tournament in California.

Indomattie Goordial-John and Team captain Candacy Atkins both excelled for the North East Region eventual winners of the tournament following their unbeaten run.

In addition, Goordial-John was voted the Most Valuable Player (MVP) as well as top batter of the tournament which attracted five teams.

North East Region had beaten Western Chargers in their first match by 231 runs.

Goordial-John scored 76 for the winners in their total of 282 all out in 32.2 overs with Monique Marhee supporting well with 46.

Captain Atkins bagged 4 for 10 from six overs as the Chargers were bundled out for 51 in the 40-over-a-side encounter.

In day two action, North East Region defeated New York Region by six wickets.

New York were dismissed for 107 in 36 overs with Catherine Jones and Louis Browne scoring 21 and 20 runs respectively.

Goordial- John grabbed 3 for 12 from her allotted eight overs to be the main wicket taker for the North East Region.  She returned with the bat to score an unbeaten 35 to pilot her team to 108 for 3 in 33 overs.

In other action, Western Region Firebirds had the better of Atlantic Region. Atlantic Region were dismissed for 87 in 22 overs.

Pauline Williams scored 22 and Anju Malik 14.

Bushra Ally, Grica Rendler  and Sonakshi Sagar  captured two wickets each.

Western Region Firebirds replied with 91 for 4 from 19 overs. Durga Das led the way with 32 while Malatha Joseph added 21. Sahar Azmat was Atlantic Region’s best bowler with 2 for 15 from two overs.

New York Region recovered from their first game loss on Saturday to record a five-wicket victory over Western Region Firebirds on the final day of competition. Western Region Firebirds scored 73 all out off 30.4 overs.

Doris Francis and Joan Serrano took 3 for 10 and 3 for 9 respectively.

New York Region replied with 74 for 5 in 22 overs. They were led by Beverley Browne who scored 24 not out.  Atlantic Region left Western Chargers  without a win in the competition, beating them by four wickets. Western Chargers totaled 143 for 9 in their allotted 40 overs. Wides totaled an unbelievable 73. Sangita Jayaraman added 19. Gul Imran and Buelah Pidakala took 2 wickets each for Atlantic Region who replied with 145  for 6.

The North East Region Team featured several Caribbean players including Atkins (captain), Goordial-John, Ananya Upenran, Elizebeth Vitte, Morna Marshall, Shondell Ward, Lisa Matthews, Lowattie Chowrie and Nadia Gruny with Marjorie Aaron as manager and Basil Butcher as assistant manager.
