Khan, Nandalall secure wins against visitors

National chess player Taffin Khan yesterday rebounded from his opening day defeats to snatch two victories against the visitors while Shiv Nandalall secured his first victory over the foreign opposition as the  Guyana/FIDE International Rating Tournament continued   at the Guyana National Stadium.

Khan, who lost to top ranked Karl Rapon of Martinique and Suriname’s Cassanova Romario Sanches on the opening day, bounced back to defeat Michael Barker in round three and Trinidad’s Hayden Lee in round four.

Not to be outdone Nandalall too secured a victory over Barker in round four.

“I feel good!”  a satisfied Khan, told Stabroek Sport yesterday in an invited comment.

He added that it was not until the final minutes of the match that he became firmly confident that he could accomplish a win against his internationally ranked opponent.

In other results of the third round, Loris Nathoo lost to Lee, Ronuel Greenidge was defeated by Rapon and Shiv Nandalall lost to Sanches.

In a match between two locals, David Khan triumphed over Ryan Singh to gain his first point in the tournament.

In other fourth round results, David Khan defeated Nathoo, Greenidge was defeated by Sanches and Ryan Singh lost to Rapon.

Rapon leads the point’s standings with four points while Lee and Sanches are on three points.

Three Guyanese, Taffin Khan, Greenidge and Nandalall are locked on two points each.

The competition continues this morning.
