CJIA to boast self check-in kiosks by September

The Cheddi Jagan Inter-national Airport (CJIA), Timehri is to further enhance its services to travellers with the installation of state-of-the-art check-in and boarding gate workstations with overhead display screens, large LCD screens around the airport, and self check-in kiosks.

And check-in times are expected to be reduced by 20 percent.

Last November a contract in excess of US$1M was signed with SITA Information Networking Computing USA, Inc. to supply and install a Common User Terminal Equipment (CUTE) and a Flight Information Display System (FIDS), the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported yesterday.

The system is expected to come on stream by the end of September.

Chief Executive Officer of CJIAC, Ramesh Ghir stated that the contract caters for the installation of 23 check-in and boarding gate workstations with overhead display screens; new FIDS with seven large LCD screens around the airport; and two self check-in kiosks at the check-in hall.

He said  that to date several steps had been taken to ensure the successful implementation of the new system. These include the construction of the core room to house the system servers; identification and selection of the self check-in kiosks; placement of the order for all LCD screens; and awarding of the contract for the installation of the network infrastructure for the new FIDS.

“When operational, the CUTE system will provide an enhanced experience for the travelling public with check-in times projected to be reduced by 20 percent.

It will also improve the efficiency in the use of the airport equipment, with airlines being able to utilise more check-in counters to process increased passenger numbers,” Ghir is quoted as saying.

At the signing of the agreement which is in excess of US$1M with CJIAC airlines and SITA it was noted that the airport is signing onto a five-year lease agreement with the supplier, and airlines will buy into the lease.

An official from SITA stated that the airport stands to benefit greatly from CUTE since it avoids costly expansion.

It may be used as a means to encourage new service providers since they do not have to worry about setting up their own facilities at the airport, GINA added.
