Boxers settle for bronze medals

Boxers Dexter Jordan and Ray Sandiford were forced to settle for bronze medals after losing their semi-final bouts at the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico yesterday.

Jordan lost 3-8 to Jonathan Gonzalez of Puerto Rico in their men’s flyweight encounter while Guatemala’s Juan Reyes scored a lopsided 16-2 victory over Sandiford in their featherweight clash.

Jordan’s best round was the third round where he scored two points. He also scored a single point in the second round.

Gonzalez scored four points in the first, one point in the second and three points in round three.

Neither boxer was able to register a point in the final round.

Sandiford, who scored a point in the first and second rounds saw Reyes racking up 10 unanswered points in round three in addition to his four points in round one and two points in the second round.

Also losing yesterday was David Rajjab who was beaten 2-0 by Jose Silverio in their taekwondo under-80 kg round of 16 clash.

Guyana’s Sven Lorrimer will be in action today opposing Andres Martinez of Belize in their men’s under-63kg round of 16 clash.

Also in action today will be Guyana’s Marian Burnett who will compete in the women’s 800m final after placing fourth in Monday’s 1500m final in 4:22:56s.

In table tennis Guyana’s Michelle John, already through to the next round despite losing her final group match to 1-3 to Mexico’s Sarah Rosas will oppose Natalia Bedoya of Colombia this morning.

Also in action this morning will be Idi Lewis who needs to get past Guatemala’s Omar Flores in order to qualify for the last 16. Lewis yesterday defeated Panama’s  Omer Tel Aviv 11-4, 11-8, 11-4.

All the other racquet wielders were eliminated yesterday.

Christopher Franklyn defeated Trinidad’s Curtis Humphreys 11-5, 6-11, 11-5, 11-6 but lost to

El Salvador’s Josue Donado, the fifth seed, 6-11, 8-11, 6-11.

Paul David was also eliminated from the competition after losing his two matches yesterday.

David was beaten by Barbadian Anderson Carrington 11-6, 11-6, 8-11, 8-11, 4-11 and 6-11, 5-11, 6-11 by Venezuela’s Marcos Navas.

In the women’s draw Natalie Cummings lost to Laura Rosales of Mexico 5-11, 5-11, 6-11 while Guatemala’s Andrea Estrada defeated Trenace Lowe 11-5, 11-4, 11-8.
