Jamaican women shine for Caribbean in Russia

KHANTY-MANSIYSK, Russia, CMC – Jamaica’s women beat Nigeria while Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago battled to a draw in men’s action, on the fourth day of action at the 39th World Chess Olympiad here Friday.

FIDE Master Deborah Richards extended her impressive winning streak as she helped power Jamaica to a 2-1/2 – 1-1/2 victory, and rescue pride for her country on a day when their make counterparts were crushed 4-0 by Ireland.

Barbados and T&T, meanwhile, played to a 2-2 draw in the men’s draw, their second successive stalemate at a World Olympiad following a similar result eight years ago.

There was no honour for either team in the women’s section, however, as Barbados were whipped 4-0 by Macedonia while T&T were also sent packing by South Africa by a similar depressing margin.

The Caribbean was lifted by the Jamaican Richards who scored her second win in as many days to spur her side against the West Africans.

She beat Oluwatobiloba Olatunji on Board 1while Ariel Barrett drew with Rachael Edward-Dappa on Board 2 and Margoe Williams got the decisive win against Olufunmilayo Akintola on Board 3.

Nigeria’s only win of the match was on Board 4 where Vivian Dzaayem beat Annesha Smith.

In a nail-biting battle of two Caribbean rivals, International Master Terry Farley of Barbados drew with FIDE Master Keron Cabralis before FIDE Master Delisle Warner and Marcus Joseph also played to a stalemate on Board 3.
