Boatswain beaten by Samoan

Devon Boatswain suffered his second loss at a major international competition as he went down to Afaesa Fata of Samoa yesterday at the XIX Commonwealth Games currently underway in New Delhi, India.

It was a one-sided affair in the 75kg middleweight division as Boatswain lost 1-8 to Fata in the four-round contest. The hopes of Guyana now rest on the shoulders of Clevon Rock who will be on show today against Thomas Stalker of England at the Talkatora Stadium.

Guyana will also seek to get a medal in the 52kg flyweight division when Dexter Jordon takes on Neo Thamahane tomorrow.

In other competition, the Guyana men’s table tennis team lost to India. Guyana lost 0-3 to India with Idi Lewis slumping in straight sets 11-8, 11-8, 11-8 to Amalraj Anthony.

Kamal Achanta was more clinical in his win against Guyana’s Christopher Franklin, who suffered 11-5, 11-1, 11-6 whipping. On Monday however, Guyana beat Dominica in straight sets. In cycling Geron Williams dropped out of the 40km points race when he finished out of the running for a top position.

Central American and Caribbean (CAC) silver medallist Ashley Khalil lost to Kate Cadigan 3-0 in the squash.

Meanwhile, Guyana’s track athletes will be on deck for the first time. Overseas based Jeremy Bascom and Adam Harris will be competing in the preliminary rounds while reigning Commonwealth Games and national 400m record holder Aliann Pompey will set out on her quest to defend her title.

Locally based long distance athlete Cleveland Forde will be competing in the 5000m finals today at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.  Jessica Stephenson, who posted her personal best in the 50m Breaststroke on Monday, will once again be in action today in the 200m Breaststroke.
