Cane cutter jailed for damage to property, larceny

Twenty-five-year-old Radrendra Balkarran of Portuguese Quarters, Port Mourant, was sentenced to a total of six and a half years in jail after he confessed to two counts of damage to property and  break and enter and larceny along with  simple larceny.

The   cane harvester ‘threw in the towel’ before Magistrate Tejnarine Ramroop at the Albion  Court yesterday  after initially being refused bail.

However, he was subsequently granted $25,000 bail on each count, but he remained a remanded prisoner.

The two counts of damage to property, namely two motor vehicles, one of which belonged to the Guyana Police Force, stemmed from an incident on  December 18, 2009 at Rose Hall town  cemetery when it was alleged that police shot and killed Hemchand Gopaul.

During the exchange of gunfire, Balkarran armed with a piece of wood damaged the front and rear windscreen of the vehicle belonging to Niteen Dookie, who  had parked the car a short distance from the scene.
A police vehicle, property of the state of Guyana, which was nearby was also damaged in the fracas, Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram told the court.

In addition, Balkarran confessed to breaking into the home of Taramattie Inshanally of Lot 60 Section C Persaud Street, Rose Hall Town,  and stealing therein  four cases of Pepsi, two cases of lemonade, sixteen sacks of biscuits, a similar amount of corn curls, a gas cylinder and a hammock, totaling in value $34,000.

In the other charge to which he pleaded guilty, Dayaram said the prisoner went to the premises of Kamlawattie Sudhai to purchase a bottle of Banko wine but when the proprietress turned to serve him, he jumped over the counter and stole $100,000 which she had in a drawer.

Magistrate Ramroop  after telling the prisoner that he was giving him enough time to mend his ways, imposed three eighteen-month sentences, along with a two-year term for the break and enter offence. However he stipulated that the sentences will run concurrently.
