A 59-year-old man was yesterday afternoon chopped to death by his drinking buddy following an argument at their Foulis, East Coast Demerara home.

Gerald Indar

A release from the police said that they are investigating the murder of Gerald Indar, 59, of Fifth Street, Foulis, ECD, which occurred at about 17:30 yesterday. The release said that investigations revealed that Indar and the suspect were imbibing when an argument ensued during which the suspect chopped Indar to his left elbow. He subsequently succumbed.

Indar’s alleged assailant was arrested and is in police custody as the investigations continue.

Speaking to Stabroek News last evening the man’s niece, Camini Ramnanan said that she received a call from an aunt who lives in the street where the incident happened and she rushed over to the house.

The woman said when she arrived on the scene she saw her uncle lying in the yard at the gate while the man who allegedly committed the act was standing at the doorway of the house. Indar appeared to be dead and she observed that he had two chop wounds to his back and one to his hand. The man’s niece said that the suspect said nothing and attempts to get a clear picture as to what transpired were futile as neighbours were reluctant to speak. She was told that a friend of the men with whom they were drinking witnessed the incident.

Stabroek News approach-ed persons living in the vicinity of the house where the incident happened but they declined to speak. While the bottom flat door of the two-storey building was opened no one appeared to be at home.

Ramnanan said her aunt informed her that after the chopping she observed the suspect fetching water with a bucket from the trench and pouring it on her uncle. The woman said shortly after she arrived, the man was arrested by a member of the community policing group.

The man’s niece said her uncle was a very good friend of the suspect and lived with the man and his two children for a number of years. Her uncle’s wife died 26 years ago. He has two children ages, 32 and 28.

Many of the persons who gathered at Ramnanan’s house, located a street away from the incident and where his wake will be held, recalled that Indar was always a very helpful person.
