Cutlass bandits waylay man after Western Union visit

A man was attacked by cutlass wielding bandits after visiting a Western Union outlet yesterday afternoon.

Albouystown resident Lennon Niles, 51, was attacked around 3.30pm and robbed of $50,000. Sitting in the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital awaiting treatment after the attack, Niles had a swollen left cheek and gouges on his leg and hand.

According to him, he had only just collected a $100,000 transfer at the Western Union branch at Humphrey’s Bakery, on Sussex Street.

He had sent his wife away with half the money while he had the other half in his wallet.

He said that after leaving the money transfer location, he dropped a friend to the corner of Sussex and Broad Streets, at a liquor store.

While outside about to mount his motorcycle, Niles said three men ran out of a Route 43 minibus and began to attack him. Two of the men were armed with cutlasses. Niles said that the men beat him and chased him.

“I was chased and I run to Kaieteur News and Kaieteur save me,” said Niles.

His attackers by that time made good their escape in the same bus. Police were summoned and Niles was rushed to the hospital.
