Handyman stole washing machine to compensate for unpaid labour

A man was yesterday sentenced to six months in jail after he admitted to stealing a washing machine when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court One.

On February 24, Dwayne Philadelphia stole a washing machine valued $30,000, property of Rafik Hamid. The defendant of 599 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

Police Prosecutor Corporal Venetta Pindar in presenting the facts stated that the defendant was employed by the virtual complainant (VC) as a handyman when he stole the item. The police were summoned and the defendant was arrested. Pindar told the court that the item was found in the defendant’s possession.

When given the chance to speak, the 45-year-old said that he stole the article to be compensated since the VC had not paid him when he worked for him.
The magistrate then handed down the six months’ sentence.
