Taxi driver held with gun after robbery

Police arrested a taxi driver on Sunday and later found an unlicensed firearm at his home after searching his premises at Charlestown.

The police said they were following up a report of a robbery at D’Urban Backlands early Sunday morning when they arrested the man close to 1 pm. The search of his home unearthed an unlicensed 9 mm pistol and three matching rounds.

The police in a press release last night stated that Clarence Foster was attacked and robbed of his jewellery by two men, one of whom was armed with a firearm around 5.15 am on Sunday. Charges are expected to be laid shortly.

Meanwhile, the police also reported that the body of an unidentified man, suspected to be a destitute, was found on the roadway at North Road and Cummings Street at about 2.35 pm yesterday.

No marks of violence were visible on the body which is now at Lyken funeral home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
