Councillors ‘diss’ Town Clerk

Several City councillors yesterday refused to recognise Yonette Pluck-Cort as Town Clerk, while a scheduled no-confidence motion against Mayor Hamilton Green was postponed until the next statutory meeting.

Last week’s meeting had to be adjourned an hour after it started because councillors broke into a screaming match about who was right in interpreting an order by the High Court that called on Pluck-Cort to show cause why she should be serving in the position of Town Clerk.

When the meeting reconvened yesterday, At the reconvened statutory meeting of the Mayor and City Council yesterday, several councillors refused to acknowledge Pluck-Cort as the Town Clerk and whenever they had to speak about her they used her former substantive title of Deputy Town Clerk.

Councillors Gwen McGowan, Pat Chase-Green and others were openly hostile as they made reference to the Town Clerk, pointing out mistakes in the minutes.

An order by Minister of Local Government Kellawan Lall informing the councillors of the appointment of Pluck-Cort was used to make a paper airplane and then torn up by Councillor Junior Garrett. Shortly after, these very councillors walked out of the meeting.

Meanwhile, the no-confidence motion which was much touted over the course of last week was pushed to the next statutory meeting because, councillors said, it needs more in-depth debate before it is voted on.

Last week, Pluck-Cort was appointed substantive Town Clerk by Lall as a resolution to the disruption that the filling of the post had brought council.
