Brown claims record as Jamaica show strength in field events

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica, CMC – Christopher Brown highlighted the all-round strength of hosts Jamaica, when he set a new CARIFTA Games record yesterday.

Brown was one of three gold medal winners for Jamaica in the morning session on the second day of the Games at the Catherine Hall Sports Complex.

His best distance in the Under-17 boys’ shot putt was 17.42 metres, which improved on the previous mark by almost half metre.

Trinidad & Tobago earned two more medals, when Shervorne Worrell (15.28m) and Kenejah Williams (15.05m) finished second and third behind Brown.

Jamaica finished 1-2 in the Under-20 girls discus, with Sashagay Marston tossing 45.26 to overcome compatriot Kellion Knibb with 42.49, and Barbados’ Leah Bannister took third with 38.09.

Gleneve Grange completed the Jamaican sweep of the medals on offer during the session, when she landed the Under-17 girls’ javelin with a hurl of 35.36, Chelsey Linton of Dominica copped the silver with 33.98, and Akidah Briggs of T&T took the bronze with 33.74.

The Games continued on Sunday evening, with the semi-final heats of the 200 metres and finals of the intermediate hurdles for girls taking centre stage on the track, while there are five field event finals.
