GPO in Lethem has to do better

Dear Editor,

A young man was stranded in Lethem for over three days without money and sought financial assistance from a relative on the coast. A sum of $5,000 was mailed to the young man through GPO.

When this young man visited the Lethem Post Office to uplift his money he was informed that there was no money and had to return the following day.

How can GPO operate in such an unprofessional manner? This is a business transaction where customers pay a substantial fee to post money. When this is done they expect commensurate service from the GPO. They do not expect to hear anything about no money being available to honour their transaction.

To further compound matters the person at the post office is a Post Mistress who seemed very unconcerned about the plight of the customer. Rather than offering apologies and promising to do her best to try and resolve the matter she just sat in her chair ignoring the customer who sought clarification on the situation.

Come on GPO, you need to be much more professional in your obligations. If for some reason you cannot honour a transaction immediately, the least that you can do is to get your staff to be more courteous and professional. After all you are in a service industry and customer relations play a major role.

So, for a fourth day in a row a young man stranded in Lethem and desperately in need of money is forced to endure more hardship thanks to the inefficiency of GPO.

Yours faithfully,
