Patentia hit-and-run driver caught by victim’s father

The driver who on Monday evening knocked down and seriously injured an 11-year old boy outside his Patentia home was yesterday caught by the lad’s father and taken to the Vreed-en-Hoop police station even as the child remains in a critical state at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC).

Lawrence Paul, a student of the Patentia Primary School, was on Monday evening struck down by a car as he made his way on bicycle to a nearby shop to make purchases. The driver had made good his escape and left the lad lying in an unconscious state.

The child’s father Lance Paul last evening told Stabroek News that seeing no satisfactory actions by the police to find the errant driver, he and a few other relatives launched their own search.

He said that the driver was found hiding out at a house in a nearby village. The father added that when he questioned the driver as to why he drove away and left the child bleeding and unconscious on the road, the man could not answer but just bowed his head.

The lad is currently a patient at the GPHC’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU). His condition had deteriorated since Monday evening and he now only remains conscious for a maximum of five minutes after which he goes into seizures.

His parents explained that they were told by doctors that he is suffering from severe head injuries and as a result of bleeding in the cranium his brain is swelling. He had on Monday night undergone CT scans and X-ray and further surgery for injuries to his head.

Meanwhile, the driver was up to last evening in the lock-ups at the Vreed-en-Hoop police station awaiting charges.
