Haslington woman sets herself on fire

A young East Coast Demerara woman doused herself in kerosene yesterday then set herself afire after an argument with her boyfriend.

Shellon Philadelphia, 22, of Lot 8, South Haslington, East Coast Demerara, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital around 2pm in an unconscious and badly burnt state.

According to the woman’s brother, Wesley Harry, his 17-year-old niece, who was at home with Philadelphia at the time of the incident, said the woman soaked herself with the kerosene and subsequently lit herself on fire.

He said that the young girl said she was confused after seeing her aunt in a blaze and as a result, ran to her uncle’s home nearby for help. The man then accompanied his niece back to the house and soaked Philadelphia with water before calling Harry. The two then took the woman to the hospital.

When this newspaper visited the GPH last evening, the woman remained in the Accident and Emergency Unit, where doctors were treating her.
