Fire sweeps through Haslington home

A  Haslington North, East Coast Demerara family was last evening pondering their next move after fire of unknown origin destroyed their home.

According to reports, around 6 pm yesterday, Valerie St Kitts’ niece observed smoke emanating from a back room at the top flat of the two-bedroom home at Lot 78, Haslington North. The young lady quickly raised an alarm and neighbours immediately rushed to the scene.

However, the fire, which was aided by the heavy Atlantic breeze, was too much for the neighbours and within a matter of 10 minutes the entire home was engulfed in flames. A neighbour said that persons ran into the house and attempted to save articles but the flames were too much.

          Demolished by fire.

The Guyana Fire Service was notified but when the fire tender arrived at the scene, the house had already been gutted.

St Kitts, who is a security officer attached to the  Guyana National Shipping Corporation said that she was at work when her niece called her and told her that the house was on fire.

The woman, who appeared composed, said that she lived in the house with her two nieces and another relative who is out of town.

She said that the house was not supplied with electricity and as such, the origin of the fire remains a mystery. ”My niece said she left the house earlier in the afternoon, she was next door and everybody here close so I don’t think anyone would want to do anything…I don’t have any problems with anyone”, the woman  said.

She added that her television set, beds, clothing and jewellery were destroyed by the fire.

Last evening neighbours were still in the woman’s yard and many of them offered forms of assistance to the distraught family. Anyone who wishes to assist the family can contact Valerie St Kitts on mobile number 694-9178.
