Man sentenced to 12 years for trying to kill wife, self

A man was yesterday sentenced to 12 years in jail after he was found guilty of trying to kill his common-law wife and attempting suicide.

Mohamed Usuf was sentenced after a 12-member jury returned to the courtroom of Justice Dawn Gregory-Barnes and announced the unanimous verdict.

The court was told that on April 25, 2007, Usuf went to the home of Sharon Ganesh, the mother of his two children, and an argument ensued between them. He then commanded the woman to sit in a hammock at her Kuru Kuru, Linden Soesdyke Highway home, while threatening to kill her. With a wire, the man attempted to strangle Ganesh, who subsequently lost consciousness. He then attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself.

The pair’s older son, who was 14-years-old at the time, later returned home and relieved his father by cutting him down before performing CPR on him.

Ganesh was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital while Usuf was arrested approximately ten days later.
