A mother of three is now dead following an early morning accident in Alberttown yesterday.
Dead is Beverley Denny, 35, of 78 Castello Housing Scheme, West La Penitence.
Denny along with her husband, Walter Denny, and her three children Shane, Steffon and Celina were in minibus, BKK 643, when a car slammed into the back of the bus at the intersection of Lance Gibbs and Peter Rose streets, Queenstown.
The accident occurred some time around 8.30 am. Denny’s husband was the driver of the Route 47 minibus and was en route to take their eldest child to lessons when the accident occurred.
According to an eyewitness, the minibus “jump the major road” and a yellow Toyota 192 slammed into the back of the bus. The eyewitness added that Beverley Denny was pitched from the bus and slammed into a concrete fence some distance away.
The bus, the eyewitness added, flipped several times before it came to a stop at the same concrete fence. The man added that one of the children also flew out of the bus and landed in a drain.
Both vehicles were reportedly speeding.
The family was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital by persons on the scene and Walter and Beverley Denny were immediately taken into the emergency room for treatment. When this newspaper visited the hospital some time after nine yesterday morning the children were still awaiting treatment.
Shane Denny, 11, told this newspaper that he was being driven to lessons at his school, Winfer Gardens Primary. “All I know is a car hit the bus and we crash,” said the boy. His face was tear-stained as he sat on one of the waiting benches in Accident and Emergency Unit.
His nine-year-old sister Celina Denny was crying loudly as she was being examined by a nurse while six-year-old Steffon Denny was sitting in a wheelchair. White gauze was wrapped around his neck while from his waist down he was muddy. The child seemed to be slipping in and out of consciousness.
Shane and Celina were subsequently treated and sent home while Walter Denny and Steffon were admitted to the hospital for neck injuries sustained from the accident.
News of Beverley Denny’s death came about two hours later. Over at her Castello Housing Scheme home, relatives had to work out how to break it to her elderly mother as the rest of the family reeled from the news.
Denny’s younger brother, Michael Staunton, said she was a “good person”. Staunton said he was “on the road and I come home and hear” the news of his sister’s demise. The man said his sister and her husband would usually drop their son to classes on Saturdays.
A family friend added that Denny was a “very loving and very caring woman”. Another relative of Denny said she was a very jovial person who was known by everybody and always willing to lend a hand.
Meanwhile the driver of the car involved in the accident apparently made good his escape. He was nowhere to be seen on the scene of the accident, Staunton said. Police are investigating.
