Garden of Eden problem caused total power shutdown Wednesday

A total shutdown of the Demerara Interconnected System occurred on Wednesday at about 16:01 hours and power was restored in all 50Hz areas by 16:25 hours but 60Hz areas were not fully restored until 19:00 hours.

The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL)  said in a press release that the problem originated within the Garden of Eden station at East Bank Demerara where one vacuum circuit breaker was damaged.

The faulty area has been isolated while further investigation is being carried out, GPL added.

The power company also informed that it has recommenced its maintenance activities with the engine overhaul and radiator replacement for the No.3 Unit at the Old Kingston Plant.

In addition, the replacement engine for the No. 3 Unit at Garden of Eden has been shipped, following successful factory testing, and is expected to arrive in Guyana by January 20.

The contractor who will transport the engine from the John Fernandes Wharf to Garden of Eden is already in the country along with the necessary specialized equipment, the release concluded.
