Man held in getaway vehicle after Parika businesswoman robbery

The police have apprehended a man believed to have snatched a haversack with cash belonging to businesswoman Chandrawattie Ali at Parika, East Bank Essequibo.

On Tuesday evening, police said in a press release, at around 9:30pm, Ali had returned home and parked her car on her bridge while opening the gate when a man came up and grabbed a haversack from the vehicle and made off in a waiting car, bearing licence plate PNN 659. The haversack contained $380,000 and a cheque valued $3.8M.

The police said they promptly responded and found the getaway vehicle at Tuschen with the suspect inside. The man was searched and $184,000 was discovered on his person. He was later positively identified by the victim as the man who grabbed her bag from her car. He is in custody assisting with investigations.

Police said they are seeking two other men that they believe had knowledge about the robbery.
