Narine bowls T&T to comfortable victory

CAVE HILL, Barbados, CMC – Sunil Narine continued to weave his web around leaden-footed, unsure batsmen, almost singlehandedly bowling Trinidad & Tobago to an emphatic, 172-run victory over Combined Campuses & Colleges in the Regional 4-Day Tournament on Sunday.

The T&T off-spinner enhanced his growing reputation with a career-best eight wickets for 17 runs from 14.1 overs, as CCC, chasing 287 for victory, were dismissed for 114 in their second innings on the third day of their day/night first round match at the Three Ws Oval.

Narine, playing in only his third first-class match for the Red Fury, ended with the amazing match figures of 13 for 39 from 30.1 overs, making him a shoo-in for the Man-of-the-Match award, after the CCC, led by Jason Holder’s 27, offered only token resistance.

Fast bowler Shannon Gabriel, playing on familiar turf having been a graduate of the West Indies High Performance Centre based at this ground, supported with two for 31 from 12 overs.

The 23-year-old Narine formalised the result about 50 minutes before the scheduled close on a rain-marred evening, when fittingly Ryan Austin, the T&T-born Barbadian off-spinner, drove him to mid-on and was caught.

The result meant that T&T, eyeing their first R4T title in six years, gained 12 points and CCC, last year’s beaten finalist, ended with no points.
Red Fury have drawn a bye for the second round, starting on Friday, when the CCC hosts Leeward Islands at the same venue with both sides looking for a point.
