Man beat wife with piece of iron

A man was yesterday charged with beating his wife with a piece of iron, after accusing her of stealing from him.

Kelvin Clarkson was remanded to prison by Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton, when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a charge that he unlawfully wounded his reputed wife, Marcia Beharry.

It was alleged that on Saturday, March 3, 2012, at Aranka, North West District, Clarkson hit Beharry with a piece of iron across her back. According to the police reports, Beharry was lying on her bed when Clarkson accused her of stealing some of his items and after she denied the claim, he hit her, causing her to seek medical attention.

Beharry yesterday asked the court to discontinue the matter, saying that Clarkson is the bread winner of the family. The Magistrate, however, advised her to seek counselling and then make an appropriate decision, given the seriousness of the offence.

The matter was adjourned until March 14.
