Elections have put Kwakwani in unique position

Dear Editor,

A few weeks ago, the residents of Kwak-wani were given the opportunity to have a fair and frank discussion with the new Chairman  and councillors of Region Ten.

After listening to the young Chairman and the councillors and hearing their views on how our community stands to benefit from working together, I am convinced further that all residents of Kwakwani should forget about party politics and collectively find solutions for our problems.

It was disclosed that Kwakwani has the largest representation per capita on the RDC and it is unique that the three councillors are from different political parties. What was also impressed upon us is for the community to have regular town hall-style meetings to discuss issues and force our regional councillors to work in our interest.

The chairman was blunt in saying that the problems of roads, health and education affect us equally and the solutions for these problems can be found in the pooling of ideas at these meetings and not from any one political party.

Since that meeting, it is quite clear that some leaders are prepared to continue along the old line.

I will continue to lament that selfless leaders are needed to transform the Kwakwani community. Leaders who are prepared to listen to the views of others outside of their circle  and do not just reject an idea because of who is offering it.

An accomplished manager of the Aroaima Bauxite Company, Tim O’Driscoll prides himself in motivating those around him with regular quotes, one being “it is amazing what you can accomplish, if you do not care who gets the credit”.

Getting the problems of the community solved is far more important than who gets the credit for it. Be it political party or leader.

The spoils of the 2011 general and regional elections have placed Kwakwani in a unique position to demonstrate to the rest of Guyana that it is important that we work together for the good of all Guyanese.

Yours faithfully
