Three minors charged with breaking into New Amsterdam market

Three teenagers between the ages of 14 and 15 years old yesterday appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with break and enter and  larceny and were each granted bail in the sum of $100,000.

It is alleged that the boys, of Angoy’s Avenue, and West Canefield, Canje went into the New Amsterdam Munici-pal Market and concealed themselves. After the market closed, they allegedly broke into the stall of Nazmoon Mohammed and stole six bottles of coffee, three bottles of Ovaltine, three bottles of Ketchup, three packs of curry powder, five packs ground masala and a similar amount of ground geera to the total value of $13,120. They also allegedly broke into the confectionery stall of Nizam Ali and stole a quantity of candy totalling $28,840.
The youths, who appeared with their parents, pleaded not guilty to the joint charges.

Police Prosecutor Corporal Roberto Figueira told the court that the defendants, on hearing the Town Constabulary alarm, went to the upper flat of the market and concealed themselves in a stall owned by Lynette Jack David, from where they were apprehended.

The accused were also charged with of break and enter with intent to commit a felony over the breaking into David’s stall.

The court heard that several stalls had been broken into recently in the New Amsterdam Market.
The three youths are expected to return to court on May 28.
