Fatal shooting of miner on D’Urban St still unsolved

Police are yet to make a breakthrough in the shooting case of two miners, which left one dead, and another still hospitalized.

Orin John, 48, of St Cuthbert’s Mission remains a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital and is said to be improving one week after he and his friend Glen Xavier, 26, of Harlem, West Coast Demerara were shot  and robbed.

Xavier died two days after the attack while receiving treatment at the institution, meanwhile, John who was a patient of the Hospital’s High Dependency Unit was yesterday transferred to the Male Ward and is complaining of less pain.

The police are yet to make an arrest in the shooting incident but said that investigations are ongoing.

The attack occurred on May 8 around 9:00 pm at the Corn Bread Mini Mart hangout spot at D’Urban and Lime streets where the duo went to have a drink after a day of shopping in the city.

In recounting the attack to this newspaper, John had said that he and Xavier, whom he met in the interior, had travelled to the city on a shopping trip. He added that they bought all the items that they needed to take back to the interior and subsequently went for a drink at the bar, where the attack occurred.

“A bus pulled up and two men rushed out and started to shoot and I tried to duck…,” he said, adding that when the first bullet hit him, he did not fall. When the second bullet hit, John added, he fell and became unconscious.

He explained that he travels to the city often to do shopping and this was the first occasion that he has been robbed. He speculated that he and Xavier were trailed before the attack.
