Mabaruma without regular electricity for several weeks

Dear Editor,

We need help and help does not seem to be forthcoming. Many people in Guyana have heard about Mabaruma, but how many have been fortunate enough to travel to Mabaruma township?  Mab is a place that anyone would enjoy, and not only because it is quiet and because of the peace and joy the people in the community offer.

The Power Supply Station in Mabaruma

But as a community we are somehow at times forgotten. For the past several weeks we have been without electricity on a regular basis; some days we do get and for days we do not.  We are not as fortunate as other parts of Guyana which enjoy light 24/7 and occasionally get black-outs; we are supposed to have some electricity from 5pm to 11pm each day, but with the mechanical problem at the power station, at present we are not even getting any.

There are schoolchildren who need some small amount of electricity to study; there are working people who might need to iron their clothing; there are others who might need to watch a movie; and still others who need to do some housework in the evening after a day’s work, but it is so difficult when you come home and do not even have electricity to do anything, not even to charge your cell phone. I know we are miles away from Georgetown, Linden, Berbice and other areas that have the pleasure enjoying DirecTV, watching the local TV station, listening to the radio, etc. We wish we could get those things, but I guess that would not happen in the near future. However, at least please try and repair, fix or replace the power station, and/or have a back-up generator to ensure we have electricity in the area.

I know the budget cuts of the opposition parties might have had some effect, but we are all Guyanese and it is so unfair to be living in this situation in 2012.

Yours faithfully,
A Whyte
