World Challenge Day – a new attitude towards active living

Martial arts, boxing, physical displays by the Guyana Police Force and a parachute jump by the Guyana Defence Force yesterday highlighted this country’s  observance of World Challenge Day at the Guyana National Stadium, focusing on a new attitude towards active living.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, opened the event with a motivational speech and encouraged the general public to make it their daily duty to put aside some time for physical activities.

He also stated that once this is done persons will be able to cut down on medical bills and benefit in other areas where health is concerned.

International Challenge Day as promised motivated scores of participants, especially the schoolchildren who didn’t think that exercise was so much fun until they tried it. Most of the children were very excited to try some of the moves that were demonstrated by the different sporting bodies.

The objective of the World Challenge Day was to introduce a new attitude towards active living by stimulating citizens to break their daily routine and practice any kind of physical activity for at least 15 minutes.

It was noted also that the major objectives of this event include bringing  communities together; enhancing  community spirit; and creating awareness of the benefits of physical activity.

Moreover, it was underscored that physical activity is social, safe and fun and is inclusive so that basically people of any age, gender, fitness and ability level can participate in the fitness for life event.

This annual event is celebrated every third Wednesday in May.
