Squad shortlisted for Caribbean junior table tennis tournament

The Guyana Table Tennis Association has shortlisted a squad in preparation for the 17th Caribbean Junior Cadet tournament scheduled for Jamaica from July 20th to 25th.

National Coach Linden Johnson in an exclusive interview with Stabroek Sport said that already coaches have been selected and are working with the players.

“What we have is players and coaches coming down to the Sports Hall Monday, Wednesday and Friday because some players have classes and if they can’t make it Monday, then they do on Friday.

Most of the players are unable to make it to training on all days because of lessons.” He said, however,  that training has not yet intensified but it will be one month before the competition.

“What we are doing now is working on techniques and individual training. Weekends we will do group training like tables, playing much more games and doubles.”

He said there are plans to have the players travel to Essequibo, Berbice, Linden and other areas in a bid to market the sport and to also give the players added training. The team started training on Monday. “We were playing a long time with the coaches, but last Sunday coaches met as a group where we had a meeting to design the training programme which we are now using.”

On Tuesdays and Thursdays the team is involved in physical exercise, but with the basketball competition on at the Sports Hall it has affected the routine.

In the under-13 boys category are Kyle Edghill, Elishaba Johnson, Rajiv Muneshwer and Neville Wong. In the same category for the girls are Jamaalie Homer, Prascilla Greaves and Christy Lopes.

For the under–11 boys are Jermey Singh, Terrence Raj, Khalil Ninvalle and Tariq Saunders. For the girls are Salanas Jackman, Nevaeh Clarkson, Abaigale Martin and Simram Bissu.
