Yassin hoping more athletes can qualify for London 2012

Guyana will be represented by at least five athletes for this year’s London Olympics which begins from July 27.

The athletes who will compete in London are 400 metres sprinter Winston George, world renowned 400 metres specialist Aliann Pompey, swimmers Britany Van Lange and Niall Roberts and judoka Raul Lall.

President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) KA Juman Yassin said yesterday he was optimistic that more athletes would qualify for the games.

“There are only five so far on the team and hopefully more can qualify for the games,” Yassin told Stabroek Sport via telephone.

George is on a High Performance training stint in  Jamaica to improve his 400 metres time but the other future Olympians will have to resort to their own methods of training to improve.

Questioning Yassin on GOA’s role in helping the athletes to improve, he simply stated, “George is in Jamaica training, the swimmers are doing their thing here and Lall is getting his own thing done.”
