Stabroek Warriors sports organization will stage its second Inter-Market football tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall next month. The tournament will run from July 31 to August 18.

According to coordinator, O’Neil Durant, companies are being urged to play a pivotal role in the development and success of the tournament since it will be bigger and better this year.

“The tournament started in 2010 where it attracted 14 markets. This is our second hosting and we have already attracted 20 markets,” Durant stated.

He added that there are market teams coming from as far as Bartica, New Amsterdam, Parika, Wales, Buxton, and Melanie Damishana, just to name a few.
The organization is also planning to host a Regional Inter-Market Tournament in 2014 which would give not only Guyana but other Caribbean countries a chance to take football to another level.

Guyana Beverage Company’s Robert Selman, second right, makes the donation to organizer of the Inter Market tournament, O’Neil Durant yesterday, at the company’s office at Diamond.

The defending champion team is Stabroek Market who defeated Mahdia in a penalty shootout.

The Stabroek Market team was spearheaded by former national striker Anthony Stanton.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Beverage Company yesterday donated the sum of $500,000 to the staging of the tournament. The donation was made by the company’s Managing Director Robert Selman to coordinator O’Neil Durant in the presence of Roy Ridley, assistant coordinator and other members of the company at its Diamond office.

Durant said the company has been supporting the tournament from the inception and promised that under the brand Tampico, the company will continue to support the Stabroek Warriors as the competition goes from strength to strength.

“The Guyana Beverage Company has always been most pivotal to the development of this tournament and from our hearts we would like to express gratitude to this company and we hope that this input would be successful to this event and its environs,” Durant stated.

Selman, in response, said that he was pleased to make the donation since it was always a privilege to do so.       “It’s a pleasure once more being associated with the markets since they have been supporting the brand in and throughout Guyana. So we find that it’s only fair that we go for the Inter Market football with the Stabroek Warriors who have run some successful tournaments before under our Fruta brand,” Selman stated.
