Men on peace bond after stairway dispute

A dispute over the demolition of a stairway landed a man before the court yesterday for provoking a breach of the peace.

At the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Terrence Curry admitted to demolishing a stairway of a home where the virtual complainant Collis Trotman resided, but said that he was the homeowner and had been advised to remove the deteriorating structure.

It was alleged that on August 5, in the Georgetown district, Curry removed the stairs of the back entrance. He, however, stated that an official from the fire service had advised him to remove the stairs because of its deplorable and unsafe state.

Curry told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that Trotman lived at the premises and was responsible for maintaining and keeping the surroundings clean, but failed to do so. He added that Trotman was asked to remove from the premises one month in advance but he refused.

Trotman, however, said that the demolition of the stairway was an act of revenge by Curry. He said he lived at the property most of his life and saw no reason to remove or demolish the stairway.

After hearing the case, the Magistrate placed both men on a bond to keep the peace and the matter was transferred to court six for August 15.
