Ex-soldier dies after being hit by car at Coverden

A Guyana Defence Force (GDF) corporal died after he was hit by a car early yesterday at Coverden, on the East Bank of Demerara, before being run over by a lorry.

Dead is Colin Sears, 39, of North Sophia, a former Corporal of the GDF Camp Ayanganna base, who was allegedly struck down by a car with registration number, PLL 2675, as he was about to cross the road, the police said in a press release.

The release also stated that Sears, a father of two, was run over by an oncoming lorry after he was hit by the car and he was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. The driver of the car is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.

Sears’ family members did not have many details about the accident. His daughter, Kimberly Sears, told Stabroek News that her father left home on Sunday, telling her that he had a special hire to the highway. She stated that he then came back later in the day to check on her, since she was not feeling well and her mother was not at home. However, he subsequently left.

The visibly sad child said that while her father was on the road, her mother kept in contact with him. She added that her mother then tried to contact him early yesterday morning but his telephone was turned off.

His daughter further stated that yesterday morning her aunt visited their home and told them that her father had passed away in an accident.  She added that they later learnt from the police that he was struck down by a car and run over by a lorry.

Sear is survived by his wife and two daughters. The police are currently conducting further investigations into the matter.
