Coverden man, 56, dies in Bagotstown accident

A Coverden man died yesterday morning after he was struck down by a lorry while attempting to cross the Bagotstown Public Road.

Police have since detained the 25-year-old driver of the lorry.

The deceased has been identified as 56-year-old Mohan Toolsie of Coverden, East Bank Demerara.

The lorry, GZZ #1233 involved in the accident was driven by a Kuru Kururu, Soedyke/Linden Highway resident.

Enquiries revealed that about 7:45 am, the lorry was proceeding north along the eastern carriageway when Toolsie disembarked a pickup (GNN #7019) which was parked on the eastern carriageway facing south and attempted to cross from the eastern side of the road to the western side. It is alleged that he then ended up in the path of the lorry.

The victim who suffered injuries about his body was pronounced dead at the scene by  Emergency Medical Technicians.

Toolsie’s body is currently at Sandy’s Funeral Home awaiting an autopsy.

A breathalyzer test that was conducted on the lorry’s driver found no trace of alcohol. The driver remains in police custody as investigations continue.
