Jamaica stun Barbados at World Chess Olympiad

ISTANBUL, Turkey,  CMC – Jamaica beat Barbados for the first time ever at a World Chess Olympiad when they pulled off a surprise win in the fifth round here Saturday.

The team of Warren Elliott, Jomo Pitterson, Duane Rowe and Damion Davy pulled off a 2-1/2 – 1-1/2 victory over the Barbadian unit of Martyn Del Castilho, Kevin Denny, Terry Farley and Delisle Warner.

Meanwhile, there were other strong results for the Caribbean as Haiti posted a big 3-1/2 – ½ win over Sierra Leone while Aruba beat Fiji 2-1/2 – 1-1/2. Bermuda and Curacao each drew 2-2 with Togo and Mozambique respectively.

Trinidad & Tobago, however, suffered a 4-0 loss to Denmark and Suriname went down 3-1 to Malaysia.

Jamaica led early on when Rowe beat Farley on Board 3 but Denny responded by downing Pitterson on Board 2.

Davy surprised Warner on Board 4 to hand Jamaica a 2-1 lead before Del Castilho forced a draw against Elliot following a six-hour marathon duel.
