Santa Rosa/Kumaka tarmac commissioned

A team of government officials visited Region One (Barima/Waini) over the weekend and commissioned a tarmac at Santa Rosa/Kumaka among other activities, the Government Information Agency reported yesterday.

The $34.6M structure which is located at the Kumaka waterfront will benefit vendors and taxi operators in particular, the release said. Kumaka has been affected by the encroachment of the Aruka River and residents have been clamouring for action to be taken.

Local Government Minister Ganga Persaud in his presentation said  that to maintain the  tarmac, a management committee comprising representatives from the Regional Democratic Council, Village Council and vendors was established, GINA said.

GINA said that for the next two years Cassandra Rodriques, Zola DaSilva, Eddie James, Richard Cornelius, Timothy Mendonca, Helen Thomas and Winston Baptiste will be responsible for the management and operation of the facility on behalf of the RDC.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Collin Croal said the tarmac’s construction started on April 15 with the contract being awarded to Sattaur Mohamed and Sons construction and Hardware Supplies. He stated that the contractor is currently sourcing materials for the rehabilitation of the Santa Rosa Bridge which when completed will enable easy passage of vehicles.
