Case of bullet-riddled taxi driver stalls

The father of murdered taxi driver, Sean De Freitas Sookdeo says that while he has an idea why his son was killed, it will be worthless to pursue it because he has nothing to gain.

Contacted on Saturday, Kumar Sookdeo said that he has heard nothing from the police. He and his wife had last said that police had informed them that investigators were working on a printout of calls made to and from Sookdeo’s number on August 28, the day he died.

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud when contacted about this last week, said that he was unaware of any printout that was being looked at. He said that police have not received any new information but the case is still open.

Other senior police officials said that the case has nowhere to go unless someone comes forward with strong evidence that will lead to an arrest. One source said that the police are working with a particular theory but investigators have so far been unable to pick up any credible information.

Kumar said that the police had promised to contact them when they were finished with that aspect of the investigation but to date they have not. He explained that they have opted not to contact the police because they don’t want to be seen as interfering with the work of the police.
He stressed that he is not too fussy to pursue the matter because “meh son done dead so I don’t really care”.

The man said that his only concern is that the police are still holding on to his son’s car. When Stabroek News spoke with Kumar he could not say which police station the vehicle was parked at. He said that investigators had said that the chassis number and the registration number do not correspond. “This car had been in this country for four years. Is he do all the fitness and so…”, he stressed. He said that the police are also still holding onto Sookdeo’s passport and cellular phone.
“He done dead. I leave all of this in the hands of God”, he noted.

The man said that he and his wife still shed tears over the loss of their son.
It was passers-by who stumbled upon the body which bore gunshot wounds at Thomas Lands, Georgetown outside the National Park, at about 6 am on August 28.
Police were immediately informed and ranks after viewing the body found a total of four gunshot wounds in the head, abdomen and left arm.
There were also cigarette burns about the body which the Crime Chief said was an indication that Sookdeo had been tortured.

Police have ruled out robbery as the motive as the man’s locked motor car was found parked in front of his sister’s McDoom, East Coast Demerara home hours before his body was found.

When Stabroek News spoke with Kumar and his wife Carol in September they were clinging to the hope that the printout would have led to the killers.
The Crime Chief in giving an update around the time Stabroek News interviewed the parents, had said that investigators were still working on the case particularly on reports that the murder was sparked by him taking money from someone to import a car but which he failed to deliver.
Persaud said that based on all the information they have this does seem to be the motive.
