Patient restrained in the nude at GPH emergency unit

Persons seeking treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) Accident and Emergency Unit were Saturday morning outraged as they were greeted by the sight of a nude man strapped to a stretcher.

The man, believed to be a mentally unstable patient, was pulled from the gutter in front of the hospital and retrained with cement slings to the stretcher for a considerable amount of time before he was finally covered.

When Stabroek News arrived at the GPH at 9am, the man was naked. Some persons were seen at the door of the unit taking pictures of him, while others tried to get a glimpse of the situation as word spread in the compound. Many persons who were waiting to seek medical attention told nurses of their discomfort with the situation, while noting that there were children present while the man was in a nude state.

A man, who was awaiting medical attention and gave his name as “Vickram,” explained that the unstable man had been lying after he was brought there in the nude state.

He added that the man escaped from the male ward and was later spotted by guards in the gutter in front of the hospital. He was quickly restrained by hospital attendants and brought to the location, where he lay, tied up with the sling.

The man also appeared to have some bruises on his shoulder and back, which he sustained as attendants pulled him out of the gutter.

After some time, the man was attended to by a doctor and two nurses, including a hospital attendant, who covered him with a surgical gown before taking him for treatment.
