Gouged eye victim healing, but unable to work

Seecharan, a carpenter, of Lot 1638 Ninth Field, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, lost his eye on October 6, when he was assaulted by the parents of a boy with whom his son had a problem.

The matter is currently before the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court and will be called again on November 23. On the last occasion, the alleged perpetrators—the boy, his brother and his parents—were placed on bail in the sum of $75,000.

Stabroek News yesterday visited Seecharan at his home and while he said his health was improving, he admitted that coping with the hardship of being unemployed was difficult for him to adjust to. “He don’t be home… He is a hard-working man, so is hard for he to be like this but he can’t fatigue; he just got to relax,” the man’s wife Janet Seecharan told this newspaper.

The woman said she is a housewife and as a result, they are relying on their young sons to provide for the home until her husband has fully recovered and is in a better position to resume work. She further stated it was very stressful for her husband and the situation had even taken a toll on his health.

“He de get blackout for 50 minutes two weeks ago and we had to carry him back to Georgetown Hospital and dey seh he pressure high. The doctors give he saline and make sure it stable and send he home since is the first time. Dey talk to he and so and tell he don’t take on too much,” the man’s wife said.

Asked about his health, Seecharan said he is “doing fine” and has been resting at home since he was discharged from hospital three weeks ago. He further stated that the stitches were removed on Thursday and he will be using a prosthetic eye.

“I can’t work. Is construction work I does do. So I just gotta wait till it heal,” he said, adding that he is eager to return to his job.
