Lorry driver put $700,000 bail over causing death by dangerous driving

The driver of the lorry that crashed into the Canter truck of Doodnauth Harripersaud last Saturday and killed him, appeared at the Vigilance Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Magistrate Nyasha Hatmin placed the defendant Anil Doobay of De Kinderen, West Coast Demerara on $700,000 bail and he is to appear in court again on April 20.

A post-mortem examination performed on Harripersaud’s body revealed that he succumbed to his injures which included multiple broken bones and a fractured skull as a result of the impact of the vehicles.

Harripersaud of Lot 9 Bee Hive Village, East Coast Demerara, who leaves to mourn a wife and two children, will be cremated on Thursday.

On Saturday last, the 57-year-old farmer had just returned from vending at Bourda Market and was going to his farm aback of Rajnarine’s Estate, Bee Hive, East Coast Demerara. He was about to turn into the entrance of the estate when lorry GNN 9358, which was said to be speeding crashed into his Canter truck GGG 4806, killing him on the spot. Doobay reportedly tried to escape but was later apprehended at Mahaica, a few villages away from the scene.
