Two in hospital after crash near harbour bridge

A 22-year-old mechanic was lucky to escape with his life yesterday after the car he was driving was involved in a smash-up with another vehicle on the western approach road to the Demerara Harbour Bridge.

Injured is Sanjay Ramjit, a father of one, of Lot 564 Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara. The nature of his injuries is not clear. An eyewitness, Amanda Gomes told Stabroek News that at about 3:15pm, Ramjit’s car, PDD 7899 was turning towards La Grange from the approach road when it collided with a black Toyota Raum which was heading east towards the bridge. “The car took the turn in one speed like speed racer and end up in the same lane with the Raum because he overtook another car which found its way back into the lane but …he still press with full speed,” Gomes said.

The woman said that following the impact, Ramjit was trapped in the driver’s seat. He pleaded for assistance before falling unconscious while being freed from the wreckage, she said.

Ramjit’s mother, Anita Dunmuhn, told Stabroek News that she received a call from one of her son’s friends who was playing cricket at the time of the accident. She related that she and other relatives rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where Ramjit was taken. He was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

When Stabroek News arrived at the crash site yesterday, a number of persons gathered around the mangled cars seeking to ascertain if the drivers had survived. Debris was scattered along a 60-metre area. The driver of the Toyota Raum was reported to have been transported to a private institution.

Ramjit’s relatives were concerned at the treatment while he was being transferred to the city hospital. “While we were on the way to Georgetown, the driver driving with one speed and Sanjay fall off the stretcher and start hollering for his chest. When I asked the attendant to pick him up from the floor they refuse so I had to help he up myself,” Romel Budham, Ramjit’s brother-in-law said.

Up to press time, Ramjit was in a stable condition in the Emergency Unit of the GPH.
