Sealy stars on debut but Jamaica still flourish

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Fast bowler Dawayne Sealy’s five-wicket haul on first class debut was not enough to deny Jamaica first innings points on the second day of the final round, Regional Four-Day contest here yesterday.

The 24-year-old snared five for 58 but the five-time defending champions rallied to score 238 all out at Sabina Park, to take an 88-run lead.

At the close, CCC had stumbled to 94 for four in their second innings – ahead by just six runs – after suffering a bad slide late in the day. They were well poised at 83 for one before left-arm spinner Nikita Miller took three wickets for seven runs from eight overs, to see three wickets tumble for 11 runs.

Openers Anthony Alleyne (39) and Shacaya Thomas (35) put on 68 for the first wicket before the slide occurred.

Earlier, starting the day on 62 for four in reply to CCC’s 150, Jamaica slipped to 80 for five when Jermaine Blackwood fell for 12.

However, they were revived by middle order batsman Andre McCarthy who top scored with 46 while Jamie Merchant got 36 and stand-in captain David Bernard Jr, 35.

Opener Brenton Parchment got 32 last evening while on Friday, Nikita Miller weighed in with an unbeaten 26 at the tail.

The resurgence started with McCarthy and Bernard who added 61 for the sixth wicket to put Jamaica in sight of first innings lead.

McCarthy struck five fours and one six off 90 balls in an innings that lasted nearly two and a half hours while Bernard faced 136 balls and struck three boundaries.

When Jamaica slipped to 188 for eight, Merchant and Miller added a further 56 for the ninth wicket to add to CCC’s frustration.
