Mullings calls out ‘SixHead’ Lewis

After perhaps ending the career of former world rater, Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman with a 12-round drubbing on Saturday last, Jamaican Sakima Mullings has ambitions of thrashing  Guyana’s first world champion, Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis.

The 30-year-old Mullings, who relegated the ‘Battersea Bomber’ to nothing but a damp squib and unanimously earned the vacant WBC CABOFE welterweight title, has signalled his bad intentions to the 42-year-old former WBA welterweight champion.

“It is important for me to fight a fighter the calibre of Lewis at this stage in my career because of his credentials, track record and pedigree,” said Mullings via telephone with this publication yesterday.

“I would like to fight Lewis because he is a former world champion and a great fighter. I believe that I one day I will also be a great fighter. To prove that I am on my way to becoming a complete and great fighter I need to fight other greats like Eastman and Lewis,” Mullings added.

When it was disclosed that Lewis (23-4, 2, 20KOs) has not trained for a fight since 2011 when he was scheduled to face Hector Comacho Jr, Mullings disclosed that his team will do everything possible to make the fight a reality.

Said Mullings: “From a logistical standpoint and regional demographics it only makes sense that one of Guyana’s most celebrated sons mixes it up with one of Jamaica’s aspiring champions. Me and my team came over to Guyana for the opportunity of fighting Howard Eastman and gained the WBC CABOFE title and we thank the Guyanese people for their hospitality.”

Mullings continued: “We would like to return the favour to Six Heads in our homeland of Jamaica. No stone will be left unturned when it comes to rolling out the royal treatment for him to feel at ease and comfortable. We promise him this but the only thing we cannot promise is his safety while in the ring because I assure you my intentions will be bad.”

The Jamaican, who won the CABOFE welterweight championship and entered the lucrative WBC Cup which will box off in June, stated he would like to step into the ring against Lewis as soon as possible.

“As I said before, I view fighting Six Heads as a tremendous opportunity. I currently reside in Kingston, Jamaica but I grew up in New York so I am very aware of who he is and what he has accomplished in boxing. To make all this come to fruition and financially viable we are working with a very tight window with respect to the start of the WBC Cup. With that said this is a fight that we here in Jamaica would like to see materialise as soon as possible.”

Point to note, before the Eastman bout, only two of Mullings’ previous opponents had winning records. In his bouts prior to Saturday night’s fight, Mullings’ opponents total win/loss ratio was 51 to 105.

If Lewis accepts the challenge and defeats Mullings, he would be in the WBC Cup and fast track his way to perhaps another world title.

The WBC Cup is a tournament to celebrate the WBC’s 50th anniversary.

It will allow boxers in the tournament from all around the world to receive lucrative pay days as well as international exposure.

Calls to Lewis for a comment proved futile.
