111 suicides last year – police

The police today issued the following statement. “Cognisant of a publication in the Guyana Times of today Thursday January 16, 2014, under the caption “Suicide claimed 82 lives on Essequibo Coast in 2013”, in which it was stated that the statistics were in keeping with records at the Suddie Hospital, the Guyana Police Force wishes to state that the police records reveal that for 2013 there was a total of 111 suicides countrywide, with 9 occurring in Essequibo.

Following Speaker of the National Assembly Raphael Trotman’s condemnation of conditions outside of Parliament, a massive clean-up is underway today along Cornhill Street and other areas.

Residents all across Linden were without power from about 14:00 hrs yesterday afternoon up until press time this morning after a breaker at BOSAI’s power plant got damaged.

Boxing workshop gets underway

The five-day workshop conducted by International Boxing Association (AIBA) certified referee/ judge, James Beckles commenced yesterday at the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) building geared towards improving the standard of refereeing and judging locally.

Some flood-hit schools to be reopened today, others to remain closed 

The Ministry of Education yesterday said that  after the receding of floodwaters and clean up exercises, the following schools will be reopened today:   East Ruimveldt Secondary Tutorial High School North Georgetown Secondary The Bishops High Saints Stanislaus College Comenius Primary St Gabriel’s Primary St Sidwell’s Primary Starter’s Nursery   Some schools are not ready to be reopened today, and as a result will remain closed.

Eleven children for overseas heart surgery

The Ministry of Health will be sending 11 children with life threatening cardiac problems overseas for surgery, as a result of a collaboration among the University of Calgary, Baby Heart (an international Non Governmental Organisation  and the Ministry, GINA said yesterday.
