Europe slams GFF decision to exclude him from national team

Guyana Defence Force winger William Europe says he feels slighted by his omission from the recently released Guyana Football Federation proposed local national team roster because he has proven himself over the years.

“…I feel like they are disrespecting me because I am a player that scored many goals for Santos and made the national team before”,” he said in a telephone interview with Stabroek Sport.

“At the age of 13, I made the under-15 national team that went to Trinidad and I can’t make under-23 national team. To me I feel they are looking on past performances and they aren’t looking at who are doing things now. I am 20 and the amount of goals I scored for Santos I can’t even count,” Europe said. “I made the senior national

team and for an under-23 team I didn’t get called. I feel like they are disrespecting me.”

Asked about his decision to leave Alpha United, Europe said, “I was getting no playing time and I feel like they were stifling me. I didn’t get to play the football I use to play at Santos. The football is different but it wouldn’t have been hard for me to adapt. I just didn’t getting the time on the field to adapt.”

He also said that his decision to sign with the ‘the Hammer’ was strictly financial. “Due to financial problems that’s why I moved to Alpha. I really liked Santos, it’s the best team I ever played for in the country,” Europe said. “I de vex that I moved from Santos but I can’t look back, so I choose to go forward. That’s why I chose to play for the army.”

The former Santos talisman reiterated that he regretted moving to Alpha, explaining that he wasn’t allowed to grow.

“I feel like I faded away because it’s like they killed my game. Half of those players in Alpha can’t do half the things I can do. I got confidence in myself. All I wanted was some time to prove myself,” he said.

The left-footed wide man also said that he had been thinking about leaving Alpha and was considering going back to Santos when the army called.

Asked about the possibility of returning to Santos sometime in the future, Europe said, “Yes I see myself moving back. When we used to lose or win at Santos, I does feel a joy. Sometimes we does get some bad days and good days but we always played with love. I enjoyed playing for Santos.”
