D’Urban Park Lions commission Festival City education centre

The Lions Club of Georgetown D’Urban Park recently commissioned a community learning centre in collaboration with the Festival City Youth and Parent Organisation (FCYPO), as part of its humanitarian activities to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

On December 13, 2013, the Club and the FCYPO opened the centre which is an educational resource operation intended to provide lifelong learning activities for all attendees and meet identified needs. In keeping with the worldwide Community Learning Centre model concept and the FCYPO’s focus, self-reliance will be practised, the Lions Club said in a press release.

According to the press release, the centre is expected to offer life skills and basic education; reading and literacy, post literacy, computer and internet-aided income generation studies, retrieval and networking and community organisation and development activities. The Lions Club will contribute its library and reading and comprehension resources from its active library. The Club also said that the initiative was made possible with the partnership of Scotiabank Guyana Limited and other corporate donors.

In December, the Club also cleaned and cleared the drainage canal in the Tucville area and hosted a ‘Relieving the hunger project’ in the North Cummingsburg area where 220 persons were served. It also presented tokens to the winner and other participants of the Peace Poster Competi-tion held in the fiscal year 2012/2013.

During this year the club plans to host a Spelling Bee competition, garden and environmental competition in the Tucville/Festival City area, health clinics and collaborating with its branch club in Linden in health related projects.
