City Council damaged machinery to be repaired under clean up programme

The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development is to repair the non-functioning garbage collecting machinery of the Mayor and City Council, which will then be used to clean up Georgetown under the $1 billion ‘Clean up my Country’ programme.

According to a press release from the ministry, the focus of the Georgetown cleanup is on community enhancement, improving the drainage network and minimising health risks.

For commercialised waste, metal skips will be procured and placed in highly commercialised areas and markets within Georgetown. Additionally, as regards domestic solid waste a number of metal bins will be procured and distributed to household that are in need, the release said. Similar facilities are to be made available across the regions.

Machinery is being procured for the different regions, the release said, and will be used by the Regions Democratic Councils and the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils to transport garbage and attend to drainage issues.

Access roads to dumpsites are to be repaired as well, the release said.

The ministry said it was looking into implementing a pick-up schedule for bulky waste in different communities.

To address the issue of the spread of vector-borne diseases in the light of the chikungunya virus, each RDC is to be issued with a fogging machine which will be used to control the mosquito population, the release said.
